Are you in your own way?
Often as business owners and leaders ascend their career ladders, they make the mistake of attributing the success that they enjoy, to be solely the result of their own efforts.  However, as the saying goes, ‘no man is an island”.

Once any of us start to believe that we have the ‘midas touch’, that we are always right, or that the world revolves around us, HUBRIS and EGO take over and begin to get in the way of future growth and success.

If you have made yourself the center of your organization such that you need to be involved in every decision, every contract, every buying decision and every client interaction, I suggest that you have not built a business or become a leader but rather have a job as a micro-manager.

If you truly want to grow, be able to have a life…you know some time off…and eventually leave the business/service in capable hands, you need to let go.  You need to pick, and begin to mentor, successors as well as give other team members the freedom to learn and fail with a safety net and you need to learn how to delegate.
Leadership and success is a direct result of influence which can only be earned not bought, gained through intimidation, or inherited simply because of tenure on the job.

We all have the ability to direct our efforts, choose which direction to travel and who to partner with along the way.  If you want to take your career and your organization to the next level remember the words originally uttered by Thomas Paine (and modified by me)…”Lead or follow but get out of your own way ..”
